What is the actual difference between the different sizes? Is the hip belt, the padded section, actually longer or what?

Hi Marko, The most important difference is the length of the pack for the torso length of the user:
S/M 16-19" / 40.5-48 cm
M /L 18-21" / 46-53 cm
L/XL 20-23" / 51-58.5 cm
